Fort Dix, New Jersey
November 1, 1950
KP wasn't much fun, but not as bad as it could have been. At least, I got plenty to eat, and lucked out in not having to scrub anything. It started at 4 a.m. and lasted to about 7:15 p.m. The mess sergeant gave me all the heavy lifting in the store room. Piece of cake, after handling freight on the railroad.
The weather continues to be unbelieveable; hot days and cool nights. No rain since I've been here; not even cloudy days.
Still don't have a complete clothing issue. Still need a dress jacket, boots, dress shoes and socks. Marching in rapidly-distinegrating civilian loafers is not much fun.
Went to the rifle range to watch some shooting. Saw demonstrated the M-1 rifle, the M-1 carbine and some machine guns. A taste of things to come.
Sent my civilian clothes home, via Railway Express, C. O. D. Now an official soldier.
